Varanasi or modern day Banaras is said to be the oldest city of India situated on the banks of holy Ganges River in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi is said to be the holiest city of our country. Hindus believe that death in Varanasi brings salvation. The city also referred as Kashi is believed to be the favorite city of lord Shiva. For several thousand years the city has remained as centre of cultural patronage. Ramcharitramanas widely respected by Hindus is written in this very city. Also Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath near Varanasi. According to legends this city is known as the royal place of lord Shiva. Varanasi can be found even in Hindu Vedas. In olden days Varansi was known to be the major centre of artistic and religious centers. In 16th century Mughal emperor Akbar contributed by making two temples in the city. After that British took over the city and remained in their hold until independence .Various temples worth watching are in Varanasi.
